Description
This painting depicts a park-like environment dominated by a hand-shaped tree form, two static monolithic-shaped cartoon figures, a figure riding a bike and a vase of flowers. The painting is an amalgam of subjects and concerns from that period of the artist's career: his comfortability with the city and his discomfort in the countryside. In this respect, this park-like environment is a space of compromise and generally expresses a sense of pleasure except for the screaming profile shadow of the foreground figure. The cartoon-like style of the painting, use of highly keyed colour and narrative symbolism shows the influence of neo-expressionist North American painter, Philip Guston, and the title are lyrics from the Talking Heads 1979 song, 'Memories Can't Wait".
