Correction: An Institutional Critique, 1:100, The Suter Art Gallery

Artist
Billy APPLE (New Zealander, b.1935, d.2021)
Production date
2018

Description
A significant part of The Suter Art Gallery’s redevelopment was the restoration and acknowledgment of the architectural heritage of the site. It was with this in mind that the electrical floor coverings plates were used to simultaneously conceal services in the gallery and to reveal the outline of the Matthew Campbell School which existed here in the nineteenth century. Here Apple places an historically accurate footprint of The Matthew Campbell School outlined in red over the architects’ plans for the gallery. This overlay reveals that the positioning of the discs was close, but not close enough. Apple proposed that the inaccurate information be lasered off the floor discs, an action that was taken in the lead-up to this exhibition. This work demonstrates the methodology behind his work; where he uses actual plans or measures up spaces to generate his critiques and their visualisation, a practice he has maintained since the 1970s.
