Description
From a series of 100 prints made in 1927 and produced as an edition of 368 in 1948. The series illustrated the Russian novel, 'Les Ames Mortes (Dead Souls)' 1927 by Nicolai Gogol. The image depicts the parade of horse drawn carts surrounded by an animated crowd. There is a contrast of characters; from formally attired figures, including the man on the left who is raising his hat in acknowledgement, ladies in dress and plainly dressed labourers. These contrasts reflect key themes of novel, which includes class and labour divisions in provincial Russia.
